Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Sandown Classic is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race held under weight for age conditions, for horses aged three years old and upwards, over a distance of 2400 metres. It is held at Sandown Racecourse in Melbourne in November.

The Sandown Classic has been won three years in a row by the tough stayer Zipping from 2007 to 2009.

Good lead up races to the Sandown Classic is the Gr2 Moonee Valley Cup at Moonee Valley on WS Cox Plate day or the Gr3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Emirates Stakes day.

The Sandown Classic was started way back in 1888 when it was known as the Williamstown Cup. The Sandown Classic was called the Sundown Cup during the period of 1964 - 1998, and since 1999 it has been called the Sandown Classic.

The Sandown Classic has seen a number of champion horses like Sydeston-1989, Arwon-1980, and Gunsynd-1971. Some of the champion jockeys who have led their horses to victory in this event are: Damien Oliver, Shane Dye, Darren Gauci, Harry White and Roy Higgins.
